City
of God opening
In the
opening sequence of city of god, they use flash cuts to emphasise the speed of
the knife and the fast paced favela community preparing food, this in turn
evokes a sense of excitement in the audience. The parallel music that is placed
in the scene is often associated with Brazilian culture so the audience know
where it is set. The use a close up shot of the knife paired with the dull blue
and grey colour scheme connate the un friendly atmosphere and establishes the
genre of the movie and as an audience we assume that it is crime and drama
based. The close up of the chicken paired the pleonastic sounds of the knife
being sharpened illustrates the togetherness of the community and that food is
very big part of it.
As the
sequence continues there is extreme close ups of other different types of
foods. This tells the audience that it is probably one of their main sources of
income and a way that they survive. The
diegetic sound of the drumming
suddenly stops and cuts to an extreme close up of a chickens, which then jump
cuts onto the bowl of blood which suggests that there will be deaths in the
movie and therefore the audience feels a sense of safety as they are not there.
This closely links with Blumer and Katz theory as the film is providing a sense
of escapism from their everyday day lives.
The camera
shows a close up of a piece of string tied around the chickens’ ankle which
could be a representative of rocket in that he is constrained to this favela
community. However when the chicken breaks free it tells the audience that
rocket might get out of his situation.
The audience
feels a massive build-up of tension as the group of boys running after the
chicken which is presented through a low tracking shot and handheld shots which
creates a sense of verisimilitude and makes the audience feel as though they
are evolved in the scene. There is then a crosscut between the scenes to where
rocket is talking to his friend. There is large of juxtaposing shots and
different angles which make the audience feel how chaotic the situation
is. There is a long shot of the gang is
shown with guns, the audience can see that the man speaking is the group leader
of the gang and is armed. This highlights the fact that the film key theme in
the movie, in that killing is big part of it. It is also demonstrates that the
community is separate as every gang member has a gun.
The power
roles in the chase are presented through the use of the over the shoulder shot from behind the gang
leader from a high angle whilst the victim is on the floor, the audience
attention is captured as this shot shows how much power the gang leader has and
how everyone is scared of him in the slum.
The audience
feel exhilarated as the chase continues and the two crosscut scenes come
together as rocket is faced in catching the chicken as the gang confront him.
This symbolises the collision the two worlds and values. The 180 degree rule is
used to show how surrounded rocket is and puts the audience on edge because
they feel like he has no escape. This is emphasised by the slow motion which
builds up tension. They have also chosen to use a graphic match when the shot
flashes to when he was younger. This paired with the freeze frame makes the
audience feel as though we need to get to know rocket before the next situation
happens. The fact that it is a voice over and in first person tells the
audience that it is going to be his story and that he is the main protagonist
in the movie. The juxtaposing colours from his current situation to his past
show that he used to live in a much happier environment when he was younger.
The bright yellow and orange illustrate how innocent they all were but now have
been affected by this community.
